A rising number of libraries worldwide recognize the benefit of this universal classification. Since 2006 the German National Library (DNB) has used the DDC to index titles belonging to series A, B and H of the German National Bibliography. In 2012 100,000 publications were indexed with DDC notations. The benefits of classifications for indexing is widely accepted among librarians. However, library users take a different point of view. Mostly, they are not even aware that their library's catalogue offers a systematic search. Most library users prefer verbal search strategies. This is enforced by internet search engines, which have changed the search habits of library users. Therefore, the obvious solution is to create a verbal access to classified titles. The DDC does not only contain a relative index with verbal elements and class names, but also links to subject headings taken from the German Integrated Authority File (GND). These were established as a part of the CrissCross project. The general digital change leads to profound transformation in research and publication processes. New ways of communication are being increasingly used for scientific exchange. The data used for the measurement of this science communication are called alternative metrics or Altmetrics. Figures such as downloads or views, social networks, blogs, bookmarking services and reference management systems are included. The determination of useful numbers from the variety of different types of publications, such as articles, data sets, blog posts, online-evaluation systems, social networks, usage numbers, requires huge effort. Providers of Altmetrics services develop concepts to integrate these metrics on an own platform and to provide additional functions for further data processing. Today PLoS Article-Level Metrics, Impact Story, Altmetric and PlumAnalytics are established services. Deriving form users’ perspective they were compared to a compiled list of criteria. Aspects of interest were coverage, usability, accountability and openness of the systems. In addition, the question was discussed to what extent Altmetrics are already being used in medicine. The results showed significant differences in several ways. Besides the German-language videos, the TIB|AVPortal also includes numerous English-language videos. However, the GND (Integrated Authority File) contains very few English labels for the subject headings used in the TIB|AV-Portal knowledge base. Thus, there is no English indexing vocabulary for the automatic indexing of English-language videos. The solution to this problem is as follows: English labels are determined by mapping the GND subject headings to other data sets which provide an English translation of these terms. The mapping strategies which have been applied make use of the DBpedia, LCSH, MACS results, and the WTI Thesaurus. As a result, (at least) one English label was determined for 35,025 GND subject headings. These English labels can be used directly for the automatic indexing of English-language videos. 11,694 GND subject headings could not be directly ‘translated’ into English, but at least it was possible to relate them to a broader term which has an English translation. As part of its participation in the Google Books government documents scanning project, the Purdue University Libraries agreed to contribute volumes of the Congressional Serial Set (CSS). Realizing that the results would be far more useful if the individual documents within this title were cataloged separately, librarians developed procedures to create brief records and began cataloging CSS documents from the 1890s. The University of Iowa became a partner in this collaborative pilot project, and its cataloging staff used the Purdue template and procedures to create records from the CSS for individual documents from two years in the 1890s. Purdue staff used those records to barcode their own corresponding CSS documents before sending those volumes to Google for scanning. The information power of search engine providers is commercializing knowledge more and more. But informational sovereignty has also political impact since the antiquity. The German system of national special collection libraries guarantees access to specialised research literature. The German Research Society (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) has begun the redesign of the existing system to adapt it to the digital revolution. Subject information services will now provide the information for special research communities. However, guidelines like the reduction of the collections to the material of immediate interest and the closing of special collections during the process of evaluation endanger the information infrastructure; thousands of journals have to be cancelled and thousands of specialized titles will no longer be purchased. Planning on a broader horizon and a financial cooperation of the federal government and state governments are both essential in developing an information infrastructure for the future that can match the success of the traditional system. National authority files now are linked with each other by way of concordances in the VIAF project. Besides these authority files started by libraries, other identification systems in other contexts have come into being to eliminate the ambiguity of proper names in very large data sets. This still does not solve the labour-intensive problem of librarians still needing to tediously research the identity of the authors in question. How easy cataloguing would be if the GND or LoC number would be printed together with the name of the author!
